Lucius Aquillius Detrahens was a legionary born in Colonia Agrippina in 799 AUC, the fifth year of the reign of Tiberius Claudius Germanicus. He received the cognomen Detrahens because of his love of hunting and the care with which he dressed game.
Before joining the legion he lived in Colonia Agrippina. At the age of twenty-two he entered Legio I Germanica and fought against the forces of Gaius Julius Vindex. He later became a veteran of both battles of Bedriacum and fought for Emperor Aulus Vitellius.
In the second battle of Bedriacum, after losing his scutum, he parried pila with his gladius and bare hands. In the heat of battle he accidentally found himself on Vespasian's side; after Vespasian's victory in the civil war he came to Syria with the Syrian legions and was transferred to Legio X Fretensis. Later he took part in the assaults on Jerusalem and Masada.
