Baelo Claudia
Baelo Claudia on the Strait of Gibraltar is one of the most legible towns of Roman Baetica. Its importance lies in the forum, basilica, temples, theatre, baths, walls and fish-salting factories that make the town's economy archaeologically visible.

Baelo Claudia developed through trade across the strait and the production of salted fish and fish sauces. The forum, theatre, gates, baths and industrial quarters connect the town’s public life with its economic specialisation.
Baelo Claudia reads almost like a textbook plan of a small town: forum, basilica, temples, theatre, walls, baths and fish-salting tanks are visible in one archaeological park. Excavation photographs are especially useful for linking the garum economy with urban planning.

Finds include amphorae, fish-salting vats, pottery, coins, architectural elements, inscriptions and everyday objects. For reconstructing food culture and trade, Baelo Claudia is important because garum and salsamenta production is visible not only in texts and amphorae but in the production spaces themselves.

Interpretation and limits
Baelo Claudia was not a capital like Merida or Tarraco. Its strength lies elsewhere: it is a small town with a clear economic specialisation. It therefore complements major centres but does not replace them.
